Defragmentation and the SnapStream TV Server
Posted by Daniel Mee on 24 February 2010 04:11 PM

DESCRIPTION:

SnapStream Media's recommendations regarding defragmentation. These directions are suitable for expert administrators only.

ARTICLE:

Most SnapStream servers have storage disks configured in RAID 5. For these systems, SnapStream recommends against defragmentation. RAID arrays do not suffer from defragmentation in the same way as standalone disks, and the rapid recycling of disk space by SnapStream software causes the array to become fragmented very quickly. SnapStream has not detected any performance degradation on SnapStream servers using RAID 5 storage without a defragmentation regimen.

If your system is configured with non-RAID storage, or if you wish to defragment for your own reasons, we recommend one of the following methods:
  1. Use Windows defragmentation, available through Disk Management Tools
  2. Copy all data on the storage drive(s) to a backup location, then format the storage drive(s) and copy the data back.
SnapStream does not recommend or support the use of any third-party defragmentation tools.
