DESCRIPTION:

This article describes the status of SnapStream support for the use of Apple Macintosh PCs as clients of the SnapStream TV Server.

ARTICLE:

SnapStream does not officially support the use of Mac PCs with our server products,. There is no Mac-compatible version of Enterprise TV Link, and currently our development roadmap does not include a Mac client. However, there are a number of ways for Mac users to connect to the server.
  1. Run Enterprise TV Link when booted into Windows using BootCamp or another dual-boot utility (Recommended)
Dual-boot utilities (such as BootCamp) for Intel-based Macs allow Mac users to boot directly into Windows and run Windows programs natively. This method gives the best possible user experience when running Enterprise TV Link on a Mac. This is the only method that gives a satisfactory experience with over-the-air HDTV or QAM.

  2. Run Enterprise TV Link inside a virtual PC running Windows
Virtual machine software allows a Mac user to run Windows inside OS X. This method will not provide a perfect user experience, but will be satisfactory in many cases. Recommendations for this method:
    • Virtual machine should be installed using VMWare Fusion 3 or Parallels Desktop 5
    • Virtual machine should run Windows 7
    • Video renderer (Settings=> Video Playback Settings) should be set to 3D Accelerated
    • Performance will vary directly with the power of your Mac

  3. Play video back through the Enterprise TV Web Admin using VLC
This method uses VLC, a third-party, open-source video player, to play back video without the use of Enterprise TV Link. This method does not provide access to some Enterprise TV Link features, such as playback from search results and clipping, but it is very simple to set up. Our blog provides a walkthrough of setup for this method (the walkthrough is written for our consumer software, Beyond TV, but works with our server software as well).
