Creating an IR Tuning Profile for Enterprise TV 4
Posted by Adrienne Gonzalez on 22 March 2011 02:58 PM

DESCRIPTION:

Creating a set-top box profile for Enterprise TV 4.

ARTICLE:

When configuring your Enterprise TV server to use IR blasting, you will need to select an IR tuning profile so that Enterprise TV can send the correct remote control commands for your set-top box. If you don't see your set-top box in the list of Cable/Satellite Box Models, you will need to create your own IR tuning profile.

  1. First we will need to close out of Enterprise TV.
    • Right-click the Enterprise TV tray icon, and select "Stop Services".

    • You will need to wait until you get a message saying that the services have been stopped (this can take a while...). Click OK when this message comes up.

    • Right-click the tray icon, and click "exit".

  2. Now run the setup wizard. (Start > All Programs > SnapStream Media > Enterprise TV > Enterprise TV Setup Wizard).

  3. Click Next through the prompts until you get to the Audio and Video Sources screen.

Select the option to Edit an Existing Source, and click Next.

  4. Click the Edit button next to one of the tuners that you will be configuring for IR blasting.

  5. On the Video Broadcast Source screen, select the appropriate source for your setup (external cable box or satellite).

NOTE: If you are using a DTA, select "External Cable Box".

  6. The Capture Device screen allows you to select the "capture device" that Enterprise TV will associate with the tuner you've selected. This option is pre-configured by SnapStream. Click NEXT without making any changes.

  7. The Channel Lineup area will allow you to create or specify which television lineup to use with this source. This will affect the channels that you have listed in your program guide.

Your server should have come with a lineup pre-configured by SnapStream. If you are changing to a different type of source that uses a different lineup, you will follow the prompts to add that new lineup here. Otherwise, leave this at "Select an existing lineup" and click Next.

  8. This screen allows you to select which lineup to use for this source. Select your lineup and click next.

  9. On the Video Input screen select how your set-top box or DTA is connected.

NOTE: If you are connecting a set-top box or DTA via coax cable, select Video Tuner and the next screen will prompt you to specify which channel the tuner should be locked to. This channel number is normally determined by the status of a channel 3 / 4 switch on the back of the set-top box or DTA.

  10. When you get to the Tuning Device screen, select "USB-UIRT".

  11. When you get to Select Set-top Box Model, select "Unlisted Device". This triggers the training process to create your new IR tuning profile.

  12. On the next screen (Advanced Tuning Settings), enter the device name where prompted. This will be the name of your new IR tuning profile. We suggest entering in the model of your set-top box or DTA.

Here is a list of what the other settings do, but all of these settings can be adjusted in the web admin at a later time.

    • Use Enter before sending channel request: Simulates pressing the "Enter" or "OK" button of your remote before entering digits. If you set-top box falls asleep and needs to be woken up with "Enter", use this option.

    • Use Enter after sending channel request: Some set-top boxes will not change channels at all unless the user hits "Enter" or "OK" after entering the channel number. Enable this option if the set-top box for this source behaves in this manner.

    • Pad Channels: This enables or disables channel padding.

    • Pad to how many digits: Specifies the number of digits a set-top box requires to change the channels. For example, a box may require the user enter "013" to get to channel 13; this corresponds to a Pad Count setting of 3.

    • Pause between transmissions: The time, in milliseconds, that Enterprise TV should wait before sending the next button press when changing channels.

    • Repeat each button press how many times: The number of times Enterprise TV should rapidly repeat a single button press to ensure that the set-top box receives it. Increase this number if the set-top box is not receiving digits, and decrease it if the set-top box is receiving duplicate digits.

  13. The Record Remote's Buttons screen enables you to train Enterprise TV to use the IR Blaster by using the set-top box's remote control. This results in your IR tuning profile being created.

NOTE: This screen will not appear unless "Unlisted Device" was selected on the "Select Remote Model" screen.

At this point you will need the USB-UIRT labeled "USB-UIRT". Set the remote control and the UIRT on a flat surface about six inches apart. Point the remote at the IR Blaster's front and hit the "Train" button to begin. Follow the instructions in the box in the middle of the screen. Once each of the boxes contains a check mark, Enterprise TV has been trained with the appropriate frequencies. If necessary, hit the "Reset" button to start over.

The LED on the IR Blaster should flash when the remote's buttons are pressed. If you are using multiple USB-UIRTs, other UIRT's may or may not flash as well; either result is normal.

TIP: It may take up to a minute for some key presses to be detected. If it takes longer than that, try varying the distance between the remote and the USB-UIRT, and press the appropriate button again. It might also be necessary to install a fresh set of batteries in your remote.

  14. The next button will take you to the External Tuning Testing screen.

To begin, make sure that the Zone 1 Blink emitter is connected to the set-top box attached to this tuner.

Now click "Run Test". The testing will attempt to tune to a series of numbers.

Tuning is working correctly if the channel displayed in the Setup Wizard test appears on the set-top box's LCD display. If the set-top box does not have a display or there is no way of seeing to what channel the set-top box is set to, such as a television, it will be unable to test properly until the "Testing" section (which tests audio, video, and channel changing ability), which occurs later in the wizard.

If channels are not changing on the set-top box as a result of the test, the test failed. You can click back at this point to re-adjust your settings and or the training process as necessary.

  15. The next screen will let you know that the External Tuning configuration is complete. Continue to the Video Testing section.

  16. In the Video Testing section, you will be able to test all that Enterprise TV will need to do in order to record shows. Before proceeding past this screen, ensure that the following are true:

    • Live TV is displayed.
    • Audio is heard while viewing live TV.
    • Changing channels by using the up and down arrows works.

There are a few common issues that can happen here resulting in the channel not changing.:

    • None of the blink emitters are flashing when you flip the channels in the wizard: Re-seat the stereo to mono adapter and blink emitter connections on the USB-UIRT labelled "USB-UIRT", and make sure that everything is firmly plugged in.

    • The emitter flashes, but the channel didn't change: Check to ensure that the blink emitter bulb is placed directly over the IR sensor on the set-top box.

If the bulb placement is fine, unplug the video cable from the set-top box, and wait a few seconds. If we are working with the correct set-top box, the video should drop out in the wizard. If this is not the case, unplug the video cable for each set-top box one at a time until you identify which one is attached to the tuner that we are working with. Once identified, connect this set-top box's blink emitter to the gold side of the stereo to mono adapter connected to the UIRT labeled "USB-UIRT".

    • Some numbers are punched in incorrectly or are missed entirely: It might be necessary to click the back button in the wizard, to adjust your Advanced Tuning Settings and/or go through the Training process again.

  17. You will now be returned to the list of video sources. Do not use this process to set up any other video sources. That will need to be done in the web admin. Please see Configuring Enterprise TV 4 for IR Blasting for further details. For now, select "Done Configuring Sources".

  18. Click next and or skip throughout the rest of this wizard. The last page of this wizard will prompt you to let Enterprise TV startup. Go ahead and let the wizard start things back up for you.

  19. Now restart the Enterprise TV Agent. (Start > All Programs > Startup > Enterprise TV or Beyond TV) The agent is the Enterprise TV icon in your system tray.

  20. You should now be ready to configure the rest of your tuners. Proceed to Configuring Enterprise TV 4 for IR Blasting
