How to run Beyond TV as a Service - SnapStream Knowledgebase
Solution

DESCRIPTION:

There is no native support for running Beyond TV as a service. This functionality was not implemented in Beyond TV because certain tuner devices, such as those in the ATI All-In-Wonder series, cannot record when Beyond TV is running as a service. If you are using a card compatible with this function (or would like to test such) and would like to run Beyond TV as a service, we have two suggestions. Please note that these solutions are suggested for advanced users only.

ARTICLE:

For version 3.4.4 and earlier:
Solution One:

A number of users have reported good results using Basta's "App2SVC" software to run Beyond TV as a service. See http://www.basta.com/ for more information.

Using version 2.7 of Basta's application (current as of 4/30/2003), an example command line used is:

apptoservice.exe /install /show:2 /priority:n /startup:A "c:/program files/snapstream media/beyond tv 3/wtlpvsapp.exe" /absname:"Snapstream Beyond TV 3" /Directory:"c:/program files/snapstream media/beyond tv 3"

Note: Edit this command as necessary to match the location of these files on your file system.

Solution Two:

If you are running Windows XP, you can use the Task Scheduler.

1: CONTROL PANEL --> SCHEDULED TASKS --> ADD SCHEDULED TASK

2: Hit "Next." The "Scheduled Task Wizard" will then (eventually) prompt you to select the program you want Windows to run. Select "Beyond TV" and hit "Next."

3: Select the "When my computer starts" radio button. Hit "Next."

4: Set an administrator account (likely yours) on this screen. Type in your passwords correctly and hit "Next."

5: Check the "Advanced settings" box and hit "Next."

6: Hit the "Settings" tab and uncheck the "Stop the task if it runs for..." box.

7: Hit "Apply," then "OK."

Note: Running Beyond TV 3 in this configuration does not create a system tray icon. Thus, you will have to create a shortcut that uses Beyond TV 3's command-line arguments to access an interface.

For version 3.5.0 to 4.6:

Please refer to this SnapStream.Com Forum Thread for complete instructions provided by a Beyond TV user.

For version 4.7 and later

Perform the follow steps:
  • Shutdown Beyond TV completely by right clicking on the Beyond TV icon in the system tray by the clock.

  • Navigate to \Program Files\SnapStream Media\Beyond TV\

  • Locate and double click on the BTVServiceInstaller.exe file.

If you would like to uninstall the service mode, perform these steps:
  • Click on Start - Run and then type in CMD and click on Okay

  • A command prompt window should appear, type in CD\ and press Enter on the keyboard.

  • Now type in CD C:\Program Files\SnapStream Media\Beyond TV and press Enter on the keyboard.

  • Finally, type in BTVServiceInstaller.exe /service:false and press Enter on the keyboard. This will take Beyond TV out of service mode.

Running Beyond TV in service mode is unsupported by SnapStream Media. If you have any issues with service mode, Technical Support will require you to uninstall service mode before any support is provided. Some of the issues that you may have are external tuning devices like an IR Blaster or USB-Uirt may not work, mapped/unc networked drives do not work, all software encoding TV tuners will not work including all of the ATI All-In-Wonder and VIVO series cards, unstable performance from Beyond TV and many other possible issues that may occur.
