Solution

DESCRIPTION:

Setting up the HDHomeRun with Beyond TV 4.6.1 to 4.8.2

ARTICLE:

The requirements for tuning clear QAM:

  • Beyond TV 4.6.1 to 4.8.2
  • SnapStream.Net account (You have ran the Beyond TV setup wizard previously to setup a SnapStream.Net account; maximum of 4 lineups per account)
  • A home network capable of handling a 100mbit wired connection
  • A SiliconDust HDHomeRun Networked Digital TV Tuner (Use the 32-bit HDHomeRun software only)
  • Analog or Digital cable service from your local provider (coaxial connection)

Note: If you are setting up the HDHomeRun with an ATSC antenna, please follow the normal procedure to add it via the Beyond TV Setup Wizard.

Note: If you are setting up the HDHomeRun for unclear QAM in Beyond TV 4.9 and above, please refer to this knowledgebase article.

The high-level explanation to get the HDHomeRun to work with Beyond TV is to scan through the QAM channels available on your cable service, determine which ones are not encrypted, and finally map the unencrypted channels that are found to an existing SnapStream.net lineup so you are able to get program guide data for your QAM channels.

A detailed setup process is as follows:

1- Plug the HDHomeRun into the wall, connect both of the tuners up to a coax cable, and finally plug a network cable from your home network into the back of the unit.

When you plug the HDHomeRun into your network, make sure you see the green network light (as seen in the figure above). This light indicates a successful connection to the network.

2- Perform the following steps:
  • Download the HDHomeRun setup program from SiliconDust's homepage. (This knowledge base article was updated March 2008.)

  • Install or upgrade your copy of Beyond TV to 4.6.1 or above and during the setup process create a SnapStream.net account if you do not have one. (Beyond TV download).

3- Run the HDHomeRun setup program (downloaded above in step 2).

Note: When running through the setup program, you may be asked to install .NET version 2.0 and a video viewing client called VLC. If you do not have these prerequisites, the wizard will automatically download and install these for you.

4- After the setup program is finish it will open up then HDHomeRun Setup window.
  1. HDHomeRun software version 20070914
In this window, make sure the HDHomeRun Firmware and HDHomeRun BDA Driver are up to date, the Install All button will be available to you to click on if they are not. Please go ahead and perform that step if it is not done.

Now click on the Lineup tab and enter your Zip/Post Code and then select your Signal Source, which will be "Digital Cable". The Lineup ID may be left blank. Go ahead and click on Finish to close the window.

  2. HDHomeRun software version 20080212
In this window, make sure the Signal Source is set to Digital Cable and the Application is set to Beyond TV.

Now click on the Lineup tab and enter your Country and Zip/Post Code and click Apply.

5- The next step is to scan your cable for available QAM channels.
  1. HDHomeRun software version 20070914

    • Click on Start -> All Programs -> HDHomeRun -> HDHomeRun Setup

    • The HDHomeRun Setup window will open up again and proceed on to click on the Lineup tab again. Your Lineup Configuration should be the same as before and now click on the Channel Editor button.

    • The Channel Editor window will appear, in the Tuner drop down box, choose one of the tuners and click on Scan. This scan may take up to 10 minutes, so be patient! Once the scan is done, it will populate the channels it was able to Tune and provide you with the Guide name that SiliconDust has listed. (Note: if you are upgrading from a previous version, you may want to uncheck "Remove channels not found in scan" as the new scan may delete channels that you had before that this scan didn't find.)

  2. HDHomeRun software version 20080212

    • Now click on Edit next to Digital Cable Channels on the Lineup tab.

6- Now that you have the available channels, open up your internet browser and go to http://www.snapstream.net and log into your account, then proceed to add your cable provider's digital cable lineup to your account, you won't have to add the lineup if you already have it in your account.
  • Now back in the Channel Editor window, you will attempt to view each channel and see which ones are available for you to view. Eventhough they may have Guide Names for them, it does not mean all of the channels are available to you. Once you click on View, it will open up the channel in VLC player. For every channel that you find that is viewable, look on SnapStream.Net's guide for the corresponding channel to identify it and then verify it is the correct Guide Name. If the Guide Name is incorrect, double click on the name and type in the correct name. Remember that some of these channels are not in high definition and some are, you will have to identify them properly and verify the correct Guide Name. You may encounter local channels that are in high definition, make sure you are using the correct Guide Name. For example, in Houston, Channel 2 NBC is known as KPRC, but the high definition version is called KPRCDT.

  • In the last column is the "Enable" field, if you decide that you would like to enable a channel for viewing then you should click on it to enable it, otherwise it will be disabled and not be viewable. It is recommended to Apply/Save after every change you make in the Channel Editor.

  • If you notice, once you enable the channel, the Remap column will populate a set of numbers. This set of numbers will be used by Beyond TV to access your channels.

  • Once your done matching the channels, go ahead and delete the cable provider's digital cable lineup if it is not needed anymore.

7- Navigate to: http://www.snapstream.net/configure/CustomLineupWizard.aspx in a web browser.

8- The next step is to import an existing SnapStream.net channel lineup that includes the QAM channels that you plan to tune to. Click on Import Lineup (make sure to keep the lineup type as Digital in the drop-down list).

9- Go through the channel lineup wizard, eventually selecting a channel lineup that includes all of the channels that you wish to tune via QAM (in my case, I select Cable -> Comcast Houston Digital -> Premium Tier).

Click on finish at the end of the import process. Next, put a check mark on the channels that you enabled in the HDHomeRun Channel Editor. After checking the channels that you wish to tune, click on Import at the bottom of this screen.

10- Now it will take you back to the Channel Configuration page, locate the line that says "Upload the HDHomeRun Lineup.xml". It is highlighted in red in the image below. Now what we will do is import the Lineups.xml or Digital Cable.xml file from the HDHomeRun Channel Editor. Click on "Browse" and then navigate to the file and select it. The default directory is "\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Silicondust\HDHomeRun". This directory is hidden by default in Windows, if you cannot locate this directory, please follow the instructions in this knowledge base article and then try again. Once you have selected the Lineup.xml file, click on the "Upload" button and then the information will be imported into your Channel Configuration. Channels that you did not import in the Step 9, but you enabled in the HDHomeRun Channel Editor will also populate and will not have guide data.

We have created our mapped custom lineup. Next we will add the HDHomeRun tuners to Beyond TV by going through the setup wizard.

11- After you have installed/upgraded to Beyond TV 4.6.1 (as instructed to do in step 2), make sure Beyond TV is completely shut down, and click on: Start -> All Programs -> SnapStream Media -> Beyond TV -> Beyond TV Setup Wizard. Click Next in the setup wizard until you get to the Video Source screen.

Highlight Add a New Source and click Next.

12- Select Antenna (Digital), click Next.

13- Select either of the SiliconDust HDHomeRun Tuners from the drop-down list and choose Next.

14- On the next screen choose, Select an existing lineup and press Next.

15- Select the lineup that you just created in the SnapStream.net import wizard, which will be named Custom Lineup if you did not rename it, and press Next.

16- Select stop autoscan and check the checkboxes for each of the channels that you wish to include. Press Next

17- Please repeat steps 11 - 16 to add the second tuner to Beyond TV.

18- Step through the rest of the setup wizard and finally, launch Beyond TV. From the SnapStream.net Program Guide within Beyond TV, press the U key, which will force a guide update. Doing a guide update will import the new channel information associated to the QAM channels into the program guide.

If you are using Beyond TV 4.6.1 or below, you have completed setting up the HDHomeRun. Beyond TV 4.7 and above users proceed on to step 19.

19- This step is only for Beyond TV 4.7 users and above.
  • Open the Web Admin by right clicking on the Beyond TV icon in the system tray by the clock and choose Advanced Settings. Alternatively, you may click on this link while Beyond TV is running in the system tray: http://localhost:8129/

  • Once your in the Web Admin, look at the left menu and click on Settings and then in the middle of the page, click on Audio and Video Inputs.

  • Locate one of the HDHomeRun Turner inputs, to the right of it, click on Edit Settings.

  • Now the Edit a Video Source page will appear, next to the line that says Editing a Video Source is a drop down box, click on it and choose Show more options.

  • The page will change to show more options, scroll down to the Tuning settings section and you will see a listing for Are you tuning QAM channels with this HDHomeRun?. To the right of it is a drop down box, change it to YES and then click on Save Changes at the bottom to lock in your changes.

  • Remember to perform the same steps for your other HDHomeRun tuner input.
