DESCRIPTION:
This article contains information pertinent to how Firefly Mini controls software products.

ARTICLE:
For most of its buttons, Firefly Mini sends standard Human Interface Device (HID) commands. Microsoft has defined standard codes that input devices should send and that applications should support, so most of the buttons will work with most applications. For example, the media control buttons (play, stop, fast forward, rewind, etc.) will automatically work with most media applications.

SnapStream has also added other commands to optimize support for SnapStream applications; these buttons will likely not work properly in other applications. See below for a chart that explains what each button does:

DESCRIPTION:
This article covers how to use a universal remote to control SnapStream Media products.

ARTICLE:
In short, universal IR remotes with a "learning" function can be "taught" from any other IR remote, such as the Firefly Mini infrared PC remote. Getting this to work is as simple as training the buttons on the learning remote as per the manufacturer's directions, and assigning the appropriate remote buttons as desired. For a detailed explanation of this process, please refer to the blog posting "Teaching `Mini` New Tricks", located in the SnapStream Blog.

Other IR PC remotes can also be used in the same fashion.

Related information: Keyboard Commands in Beyond TV, Keyboard Commands in Beyond Media.

DESCRIPTION:
The user discovers that all, or some, of the Firefly Mini's buttons do not work although the Firefly Mini receiver lights up when a button is pressed.

ARTICLE:
If none of the buttons work in any application, ensure that the FireflyMini.exe applet is running by locating this executable on the system and double-clicking it. This file will be installed in:
\program files\snapstream media\firefly mini

If the Firefly Mini applet is running but the buttons still do not function, or when pressed, launch other applications such as an e-mail client or a media player, this is almost certainly caused by another input device connected to the system, which also (like the Firefly Mini) uses HID (Human Interface Device) commands. The problem, however, is that the other device is intercepting the Firefly Mini's commands -- and not allowing them to be passed to the program.

This most often is due to keyboards which have special buttons for launching e-mail applications, and/or playback controls such as pause, play, and volume control. If the device cannot be configured to allow other HID-compliant input devices to work properly on the system, it will have to be disabled.

In the case of keyboards, this means uninstalling the keyboard software. When Windows re-detects it with the manufacturer's software uninstalled, it should select (otherwise manually choose) the "Standard 101/102-Key..." keyboard. Since this keyboard does not use HID commands, the Firefly Mini should function properly afterwards.

We apologize that no better workaround is available for this problem at this time, but currently there is little that can be done about another device intercepting and preventing, or intercepting and causing unwanted results of, HID commands from the Firefly Mini.
